Celebrating National Principals Month: Kerry Estep of Hickory Flat ES!

October is National Principals Month! Our Principals are amazing instructional leaders dedicated to ensuring our students learn more, grow more, and achieve more in our classrooms than they could anywhere else!  We’re recognizing these inspiring leaders with special posts throughout the month. Please join us in thanking them for all they do to support our mission of being the highest performing school district in Georgia.

Hickory Flat Elementary School Principal Kerry Estep

Why did you want to become a teacher?
I was born a teacher.  My family used to joke that I had the smartest stuffed animals ever because I would line them up and “teach them” everything I had learned that day.  This innate passion for sharing knowledge has driven my career and shaped my approach to education.

Who was the most influential teacher in your life?
Mrs. Loretta Quam, my third-grade teacher at Keheley Elementary School, had a unique way of making each student feel special and valued.  Her classroom was a place where learning was not just about academics, but also about building a community where everyone felt included.  One of the most memorable aspects of Mrs. Quam's teaching style was her use of nicknames.  She gave each student a nickname that highlighted a personal trait or a memorable moment.  My nickname was “tomato face” because my face would always turn red whenever I was embarrassed.  Though it might sound silly, it was Mrs. Quam's way of showing affection and creating a bond with her students.  These nicknames were not just labels; they were a form of recognition that made each of us feel seen and appreciated.

What’s a favorite memory from your first year as a teacher?
Knowing the powerful influence a teacher can have, I was determined to create a positive and nurturing classroom environment.  I embraced the opportunity to inspire young minds, fostering both academic growth and personal development.  It was gratifying to know that my efforts could potentially shape their future paths, instilling a love for learning and a sense of curiosity.

How did teaching prepare you to be a Principal?
Teaching instilled in me a commitment to lifelong learning and professional development.  This mindset is crucial for a Principal, who must continuously seek out new strategies, technologies, and methods to improve the school environment and enhance student learning outcomes.  Teaching also provided a solid foundation that prepared me for the multifaceted role of a Principal, equipping me with the skills necessary to lead, inspire, and drive educational success.
